Ariana Grande Comes Full Circle With 2020 Grammy Performance

Following last year’s booking controversy, Ariana Grande took to the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards stage on Sunday night (January 26) to perform a show-stopping medley of familiar cuts and it turned into a full circle moment for the superstar.

With introductions from Ben Platt, Grande, 26, appeared alongside an orchestra for the powerful rendition of her thank u, next cut "imagine." Resilient and full of poise, the chart-topper stood tall for the opening number, which slowly transitioned into a cover of Julie Andrews' "My Favorite Things." Wearing an oversized gown, her vocals came to a close and the opening notes of "7 rings" took over the Staples Center. With her backup dancers, she turned her performance into a sassy slumber party as the group delivered choreography on the pink hued set. To end the number, the singer delivered a few lines from "thank u, next" and trekked back to her bed as she did in the video for the song.

Even though Grande landed five nominations for this year’s ceremony, her booking came as a surprise to many as the singer was scheduled to perform in 2019, but she nixed her number altogether after being prohibited from performing her single at the time, “7 rings.” Things got tense when she called out show producer Ken Ehrlich for claiming she cancelled the number because she wasn't able to "pull something together" in time for the ceremony.

Since then, Ehrlich has touched on their quarrel, telling Billboard that the controversy was entirely overblown. “The whole thing got out of control,” he told the outlet. “From the beginning, I was a champion of hers…I'm really glad she's back. We had a lovely rapprochement at her show at the Forum a few weeks ago.”
