All Vehicle Restrictions Lifted, Speed Limits Restored on Roadways in the Southcentral PA Region

No restrictions remain in place in the region

Harrisburg, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has lifted all vehicle restrictions and speed limit and right-lane-only commercial vehicle restrictions in place on major roadways in the southcentral Pennsylvania region.

PennDOT is continuing to treat roadways in the area and will continue until roads are clear. Drivers should be aware they may encounter icy conditions in some areas, especially on bridges, bridge approaches and ramps.

Wintry weather and black ice can be hazardous, so here are some essential tips from NHTSA:

• Slow down: Ease off the gas pedal immediately when you spot black ice.

• Brake gently: Tap lightly—don’t slam on the brakes.

• Steer smart: If you skid, turn your wheel in the direction of the skid.

• Follow farther: Keep 8-10 seconds of distance between you and the car ahead.

• Prep your car: Keep your gas tank full and your battery charged.

• Know black ice: It’s a thin, invisible glaze often on bridges, overpasses, and shaded areas.

• Drive sober: Stay sharp—alcohol and drugs impair critical skills.

Getting Your Vehicle Ready

Preparation is one key to successfully navigating winter roads. Winter weather can bring unexpected conditions, so make sure your vehicle is ready for ice and snow. Prior to the winter driving season, you should have a mechanic check the brakes, battery, hoses and belts. Below are some additional tips for getting your vehicle ready for winter.

  • Check that your fluid levels are full.
  • Make sure your wipers don't streak. You may want to consider installing winter wiper blades.
  • Ensure your heater and defroster are working properly.
  • Check that your vehicle's radio is working properly so you can receive weather and traffic reports.
  • Make sure all lights are working.
  • Check to be sure tires are properly inflated and have sufficient tread depth.
  • If you live in an area prone to heavy snow, you may want to use dedicated snow tires on your vehicle or carry a set of tire chains. At a minimum, your all-weather tires should be mud and snow rated.
  • In the case of a problem, contact a mechanic immediately.
