Lancaster County Approves $7.4M Contract for New Jail

The Lancaster County Commission has approved a $7.4 million contract with Skanska USA to construct a new jail, marking a significant step in replacing the current facility that has been in use since the 1850s. The new jail will be built near Willow Street Pike and will span over 400,000 square feet, accommodating up to 1,000 inmates.

Commissioner Josh Parsons emphasized Skanska's expertise in corrections and large-scale projects, stating that the firm was the best fit for the county's needs. Skanska, a multinational construction company based in New Jersey, expressed enthusiasm about joining the project team. "We are very, very pleased and excited to be part of the project team," said Craig Ronning, architectural design/project manager for Skanska, according to WGAL.

The design phase is ongoing, with construction expected to begin in 2026 and completion projected for 2028. Skanska will manage the project's construction schedule and costs, ensuring that the timeline and budget are maintained. The firm will also provide oversight during the construction phase, reviewing designs and looking for potential cost savings, as reported by LancasterOnline.

The new facility's location was strategically chosen for its proximity to the courthouse, which will facilitate the transfer of inmates. Commissioner Ray D’Agostino highlighted the importance of hiring a construction manager for the project, which has been in the works since 2022. Skanska's role will include monitoring the work of building contractors and ensuring safety protocols on site, as noted by Global Flow Control.
