Authorities are investigating a crash on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Lancaster County that occurred on Friday (August 15). The incident involved an 18-wheeler striking the Fifth Street Bridge, causing its cargo container to come loose and create a hazardous situation on the road.

According to LancasterOnline, the crash happened around 2:20 p.m. when the tractor-trailer, driven by a New Jersey man, hit the bridge. The container fell into the eastbound lanes, where it was struck by two vehicles. One of these vehicles, a Subaru sedan carrying three people, also collided with a concrete wall.

Emergency responders shut down the eastbound lanes for over five hours, as reported by ABC27. The lanes reopened around 7:30 p.m. after crews cleared the scene. Two of the three individuals involved sustained serious injuries and were hospitalized.

The crash caused significant traffic delays, with vehicles being rerouted via Route 72, U.S. 322, and U.S. 222. The Pennsylvania State Police continue to investigate the incident to determine the exact cause and any potential charges.
