The Harrisburg Boys & Girls Club in Pennsylvania will reopen as planned on September 2, despite a recent burglary that caused extensive damage. Executive Director Mark Hawthorne confirmed that the John N. Hall Clubhouse suffered significant vandalism during the break-in, which occurred last weekend.
According to ABC27, the damage was "far worse" than anticipated, with nearly every room affected. Electronics, including computers and video games, were stolen or destroyed, and fire extinguishers were used to damage remaining items. The burglary has resulted in an estimated $12,000 to $15,000 in damages.
PennLive reported that the building had been closed over the summer due to financial constraints. Despite the setback, Hawthorne remains committed to reopening for after-school programs, which have over 75 children registered.
The community is encouraged to assist in the recovery efforts. Those interested in helping can contact the club at (717) 234-3268 for more information on current needs. The Harrisburg police are investigating the incident and following leads to identify the suspects, who are believed to be juveniles.
Hawthorne emphasized the importance of community support, stating, "The future of our children belongs to all of us, and it will take every one of us... to make sure every child has a positive, safe place to belong."
