National Donut Day is celebrated annually on the first Friday in June, and this year it falls on Friday, June 5, 2026. This delightful day not only celebrates the beloved donut but also honors the Salvation Army Lassies who served donuts to soldiers during World War I. The tradition began in 1938 as a fundraiser for the Salvation Army in Chicago to help those in need during the Great Depression.
The origins of National Donut Day date back to 1917 when the Salvation Army sent a group of women, known as Lassies, to the front lines in France to boost the morale of American troops. These women set up field bases near the front lines, providing soldiers with necessities and a taste of home through homemade donuts. The donuts were often cooked inside the helmets of the troops, earning the nickname "doughboys."
