FOR DOWNED TREES OR POWER LINE:

🌳 DOWNED TREE? CALL YOUR LOCAL MUNICIPALITYIF POWER LINES ARE INVOLVED, CALL YOUR ELECTRIC UTILITY IMMEDIATELY

Summary: Staying Safe Around Downed Power Lines

  • Never touch or move a downed power line — it may still be energized and extremely dangerous.
  • After a vehicle accident, drive away from any downed lines if it’s safe and you can do so without running them over.
  • If fire or danger forces you to exit a vehicle near downed lines, jump clear without touching the car and ground at the same time. Land with your feet together and shuffle away in small steps.
  • Stay at least 30 feet away from downed wires and anything they touch, including water or fences.
  • Electricity can travel through the ground, so never approach a downed line.
  • Call 911 and your local electric utility so emergency crews can secure the area.
  • Treat all downed lines as energized — even if they look like phone or cable lines.
  • Remember that lines that appear de‑energized can become energized again.

If you’re dealing with a downed tree, here’s the simple rule of thumb:

🌳 Call your local municipality or public works department first — they handle trees blocking roads, sidewalks, or public property.

If the tree is tangled with power lines or has brought lines down, call your electric utility immediately and keep a safe distance. After that, emergency services (911) may also need to secure the area.

🏡 If the tree is on your property and not involving power lines, a licensed tree‑removal service or arborist is the right call.
