Before Hurricane Michael slammed the Florida panhandle, locals and tourists flocked to Killer Seafood in Mexico Beach. The restaurant is known for their fish tacos and was the place to eat and hang out in Mexico Beach, but the brick-and-mortar location was wiped out by the storm’s destructive force.
They don’t have a physical location anymore, but Killer Seafood is still going strong, feeding hungry folks in the area. Less than a week after the hurricane, the iconic seafood joint had a new kitchen setup in front of Mexico Beach’s City Hall. They’re working to feed first responders, volunteers, and locals free of charge at what’s been dubbed Camp Happy Tummies.
It’s a makeshift, tented kitchen serving breakfast and dinner and Camp Happy Tummies is also now the gathering place for people among the rubble of Mexico Beach. A GoFundMe fundraiser is helping to keep things running so they can keep providing hot meals to the town for a few weeks.
