>Hurricane Ian Gets Closer To South Carolina updated at 6a 9/30

(Charleston, SC) -- Hurricane Ian is closing in on the South Carolina coast. The National Hurricane Center says Ian is about 145 miles southeast of Charleston with 85 mile-an-hour winds. Forecasters say Ian will make landfall as a Category One storm sometime today and will quickly weaken by Saturday. Around 14-million people are under alert. Life-threatening storm surge and hurricane conditions with the risk of tornadoes are expected along the coast.

Out of state animal shelters are helping Florida shelters that have been impacted by the storm. About three-dozen dogs and cats from Florida shelters will arrive in Chicago where volunteers and staff with the Anti-Animal Cruelty Society are freeing up space for temporary housing. Some of the animals will be placed in foster homes while others will be put up for adoption.

Air travellers are feeling the effects of Hurricane Ian. Thousands of flights are being canceled because of the storm. FlightAware says nearly two-thousand U.S. flights have been canceled for Thursday, and hundreds of Friday flights have also been canceled.

Governor Kemp is urging Georgians to prepare, but not panic, for Hurricane Ian to impact the state. During a visit to GEMA Headquarters this morning, Kemp said the storm is likely to weaken as it makes its way across Florida and toward Georgia. But that does not mean we should let our guard down.
