USDA Proposal to Cut Chocolate Milk Would Hurt PA Dairy Farmers

(Harrisburg, PA) -- State officials say a proposed federal ban to pull chocolate milk from public elementary and middle schools could hurt Pennsylvania dairy farmers. The USDA says the nationwide proposal would pull the product from school cafeterias to fight child obesity. Flavored milk could still be served in high schools, however. One USDA proposal, which wouldn't go into effect for two more years, would limit students in grades K through 5 to a variety of unflavored milk. A spokesman for the state Dairymen's Association says chocolate milk has also long been a way to introduce milk to picky eaters.
