>>NJ Lawmaker's Bill Would Test Baby Food For Metals
(Trenton, NJ) --
The U.S. government is being urged to mandate testing of baby food for metal contaminants. New Jersey Democrat Frank Pallone is one of several lawmakers behind the Improving Newborns' Food and Nutrition Testing Safety -- or INFANTS Act, which requires finished baby food products, including infant formula, to be tested for toxic heavy metals including lead, cadmium, and mercury. These contaminants can prove extremely dangerous to infants, and items like lead and mercury can cause decreased IQ and prompt a host of other developmental issues. Pallone's bill would also monitor for bacteria like salmonella. There is currently no federal mandate for testing finished baby food products for contaminants like heavy metals.
