Law enforcement officers in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, have launched a crackdown on aggressive driving. The initiative, which began on July 8 and will run through August 18, is part of a statewide effort to reduce traffic-related crashes, injuries, and fatalities. Over 300 municipal police agencies and the Pennsylvania State Police are participating in the campaign, which is funded by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) using federal funds from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The crackdown is particularly focused on Route Eleven, a known hotspot for aggressive driving behaviors. Officers are on the lookout for violations such as speeding, tailgating, running red lights, and heavy truck violations. Pedestrian safety is also a key concern. Any aggressive driver stopped by police during this period will receive a ticket.
Speeding accounts for more than one-quarter of all traffic-related fatalities nationally. Young drivers and motorcyclists are especially susceptible to high speeds, representing the largest demographic involved in speeding-related vehicle crashes.
