In Lebanon County, Pennsylvania, David and Gina Strause face charges following the death of their three-month-old infant last year. The child died from "complications of asphyxia" after being placed to sleep on their stomach, according to ABC27 News. The parents allegedly ignored safe sleep guidelines, which recommend placing babies on their backs to sleep.
The charges against the couple include involuntary manslaughter, endangering the welfare of children, and recklessly endangering another person. The baby was found unresponsive in a crib containing loose items like blankets and stuffed animals, and a blue infant lounger, which is considered a hazard for infants.
The investigation began at Hershey Medical Center in May 2024. State police discovered that the parents had received proper sleeping instruction paperwork after the child's birth, emphasizing the importance of placing a baby on their back. They had also signed a "Pennsylvania Infant Safe Sleep Initiative – Voluntary Acknowledgment Statement" form.
Both parents are currently out on $100,000 unsecured bail and have a preliminary hearing scheduled for May 15. The case highlights the importance of adhering to safe sleep practices to prevent similar tragedies.
