Over the Memorial Day weekend, the Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) reported a decrease in the number of crashes but an increase in DUI arrests compared to last year. From May 23 to May 26, troopers responded to 756 crashes across the state, a reduction of nearly 100 incidents from 2024. These crashes resulted in 140 injuries and five fatalities. Intoxicated driving contributed to 57 of these crashes, including two fatal ones.
Despite the drop in crashes, DUI arrests rose significantly. PSP arrested 519 drivers for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, up from 456 arrests during the same period last year. In addition to DUI arrests, troopers issued 27,139 citations for various traffic violations.
The statistics provided by PSP only cover incidents investigated by the state police and do not include those handled by other law enforcement agencies. The increased enforcement efforts are part of PSP's ongoing mission to improve roadway safety across Pennsylvania.
According to Fox43, the PSP's Memorial Day Weekend enforcement detail is an annual initiative aimed at reducing traffic incidents and ensuring public safety.
