An anti-climb security fence is being installed around the Pennsylvania Governor's Residence in Harrisburg following an arson attack in April. The new fence, located near Front and Geiger Streets, aims to prevent future security breaches after a man climbed the previous barrier and set fires inside the residence.
According to WHP-TV, the Pennsylvania State Police are increasing security measures, including the installation of temporary fencing and barricades during the construction. The Department of General Services stated that these upgrades are part of a broader effort to ensure the long-term safety and functionality of the historic property.
The attack, which occurred on April 13, involved Cody Balmer, who allegedly used Molotov cocktails to start fires inside the residence. Balmer, 38, has been charged with attempted homicide, terrorism, and other crimes. Spotlight PA reports that the State Police have created a new uniformed unit to maintain a visible presence at the residence.
An independent review by a former State Police commissioner recommended security enhancements, including the anti-climb fence. The review, which remains confidential, assessed security protocols and infrastructure. PhillyVoice notes that the new fence will feature sharp tips and smooth surfaces to deter climbing.
The restoration of the damaged sections of the mansion is underway, with plans to resume public tours. Balmer's preliminary hearing was scheduled for May 28.
