Former Pennsylvania Senator Bob Casey has joined the University of Scranton as a Leahy Distinguished Fellow in Public Service. Casey, a Scranton native, will mentor students, advise on initiatives, and contribute to university activities related to public service and leadership. He left office in January after losing his re-election bid to Republican Dave McCormick.
During a ceremony on Tuesday (August 5), Casey expressed his excitement about inspiring young people to serve in various capacities, not just in government. "Even if you're running the biggest corporation in the world, you can still work on behalf of the public in some fashion," he said.
Casey served three terms in the U.S. Senate, where he authored 99 pieces of legislation, including the Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) Act. He was a leading advocate for children, workers, seniors, and people with disabilities.
University President Joseph G. Marina welcomed Casey, highlighting his Jesuit education and values. Casey will guide students interested in public service careers, advise the Center for Ethics and Excellence in Public Service, and assist with government relations and resource development efforts.
The academic year at the University of Scranton begins later this month, with classes starting on August 25.
