Veolia Water has announced the cause of water discoloration issues that have affected the Harrisburg, Pennsylvania area over the summer. The utility identified the problem as stemming from a disruption at the water treatment plant in Susquehanna Township in late June, followed by an "unprecedented" eight water main breaks over six weeks. Additionally, both permitted and unpermitted hydrant usage contributed to the discoloration, according to a joint statement from Veolia and local lawmakers.

Veolia plans to issue credits to customers for additional water used during flushing, as well as for costs related to stained fabric and other damages. The company is also organizing public forums in the Harrisburg region to address customer concerns and provide more information on the issue. State Senator Patty Kim emphasized the importance of transparency, saying, "These forums will be a much-needed opportunity to not only learn more about the causes of recent issues but also ask questions directly to Veolia management" (ABC27).

State Representative Justin Fleming expressed frustration over the duration of the issue but remains optimistic about Veolia's commitment to resolving it. Veolia's Larry Finnicum stated, "Our system has experienced a highly unusual series of events, and we will continue to work relentlessly to resolve the discolored water issues that have affected our customers" (Local21News).

Customers experiencing ongoing issues are encouraged to contact Veolia’s 24-hour customer service center. If problems persist, they can file a complaint with the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) for further investigation.
