A Gettysburg man, Dustin Michael Hankey, 31, was arrested on Thursday (August 14) for multiple sex crimes against children. The arrest followed an investigation by the Gettysburg Police Department and the Adams County District Attorney's Office. Hankey is charged with several felony counts, including sexual abuse of children and criminal use of a communication facility.
The investigation began in May when a former acquaintance of Hankey's discovered 141 images of nude children on a cell phone she had loaned him. The images, some of which were generated using artificial intelligence, depicted juveniles with photoshopped faces of known children. The phone was confiscated and examined, linking the device to Hankey.
Authorities obtained a search warrant and downloaded the phone's contents for forensic examination. The evidence revealed nude images of 19 different juvenile girls. Investigators traced Hankey's browsing history to a website that uses AI to alter photos of clothed children into nude images.
Local21 News reported that Hankey was arrested without incident and is currently being held at the Adams County Adult Correctional Complex, awaiting his preliminary hearing. The case highlights the growing concern over the use of AI in creating illicit content.
Hankey's arrest marks a significant step in the ongoing efforts to combat child sexual exploitation. The investigation continues as authorities work to ensure justice for the victims involved.
