Pennsylvania Democratic Party Chair Sharif Street announced his resignation to focus on his congressional campaign. Street, a State Senator from Philadelphia, is stepping down to prepare for the race to succeed retiring Congressman Dwight Evans. The election to replace him as party chair is set for September 6.
Street, who made history in 2022 as the first Black and Muslim man to lead the Pennsylvania Democratic Party, expressed pride in his tenure. He stated, "I took on this role to build a Democratic Party that was more inclusive, more united, and more powerful." He added that the party is now "strong, energized, and ready to meet the challenges ahead."
Street's decision comes amid questions from Democratic National Committee Chairman Ken Martin and Governor Josh Shapiro about whether he should continue leading the state party while running for Congress. Street is one of several Democrats vying for the 3rd District seat, including state Representative Chris Rabb.
During his leadership, Street oversaw a mixed electoral record. In 2022, Democrats retained the governor's mansion and flipped a U.S. Senate seat. However, in 2024, Republicans swept the state, securing its 19 electoral votes and flipping a Senate seat.
Street plans to endorse former state Auditor General Eugene DePasquale as his successor. The new chair must identify as male to maintain gender-balanced leadership within the party.
