Unemployment rates in Lancaster and Reading, Pennsylvania, have increased by more than one percent since April, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. As of July, Lancaster's unemployment rate is nearly one percentage point below the state's average of 4.6 percent, while Reading's rate is slightly above the state average. Across Pennsylvania, over 300,000 individuals are currently unemployed.

The rise in unemployment comes as part of a broader trend affecting the entire Midstate region. The unemployment rates in July were higher than both the previous month and the same period last year. The increase in unemployment serves as an indicator of the economic challenges faced by the region.

Despite these challenges, Lancaster's unemployment rate remains lower than many other parts of Pennsylvania. The local and state unemployment rates are not seasonally adjusted, which can impact comparisons with the national rate. Economists have previously warned that certain economic policies, such as tariffs, could contribute to job losses in the region.

As the Labor Day weekend approaches, the focus remains on addressing the economic issues contributing to the rise in unemployment. Efforts to improve the job market and support those affected by unemployment continue to be a priority for local and state officials.
