A solemn procession took place in Spring Grove, Pennsylvania, to honor three York County police officers who were killed in the line of duty on Wednesday (September 17). Community members gathered along the roadside to pay their respects to the officers from the Northern York County Regional Police Department and the Sheriff's Office. Two other officers remain hospitalized in critical condition.
The officers were shot while serving a warrant related to a domestic incident at a farm in North Codorus Township, according to the Pennsylvania State Police. The suspect, who was shot by law enforcement, is also deceased. The identities of the officers and the suspect have not been released as the investigation continues.
Governor Josh Shapiro expressed his condolences, stating, "This is an absolutely tragic and devastating day for York County and for the entire Commonwealth of Pennsylvania." The incident is being described as one of the deadliest days for Pennsylvania police in recent history, reminiscent of a 2009 incident in Pittsburgh where three officers were killed.
The investigation, led by the Pennsylvania State Police and the York County District Attorney's office, spans multiple locations throughout York County. Authorities assure the public that there is no ongoing threat to their safety. The investigation is expected to continue into the night and early morning hours.
In the aftermath of the shooting, local residents showed their support by holding American flags and saluting as police and emergency vehicles passed by. Flowers have been left at the Northern York Regional Police Department headquarters as a tribute to the fallen officers.
