March For Life Outside PA State Capitol

Thousands gathered outside the Pennsylvania State Capitol in Harrisburg on Monday (September 22) for the annual March for Life. The event, which draws six to seven thousand participants each year, aims to end abortion rights in the Commonwealth. This year's march began with a worship service that included prayers for the fallen York County officers and conservative figure Charlie Kirk, who was recently shot while speaking at a university in Utah. Organizers noted heightened security measures at the event due to Kirk's shooting.

The march advocates for bills SB 973 and HB 606, which would introduce early human development education in schools. According to ABC27, the march opposes HB 26, which seeks to repeal parts of the Abortion Control Act and treat abortion like healthcare. Michael Geer, President and CEO of the PA Family Institute, emphasized the cultural shift among young people seeking deeper meaning in life and the beauty of human life.

The march faced criticism from some lawmakers, including Rep. Kinkead from Allegheny County, who highlighted the irony of the march coinciding with discussions on gun safety legislation. Kinkead expressed a desire for participants to address gun violence and other life-saving measures, such as food insecurity and preventable diseases.

The event required over 75 buses to transport participants from across Pennsylvania to the Capitol. The National Right to Life estimates over 65 million abortions have occurred in the U.S. since 1973. The march's focus on life and related legislation continues to spark debate and discussion among both supporters and critics.
