Lieutenant David Godfrey, a York County Sheriff's Deputy, has spoken publicly for the first time since being wounded in an ambush shooting on September 17 in North Codorus Township, Pennsylvania. Godfrey, who is still hospitalized, expressed his gratitude to the community through a social media video posted on Wednesday (October 1).
In the video, Godfrey thanked everyone for their prayers and kind words, stating, "I will keep this short. Thank you. From the deepest part of my soul. Your prayers, thoughts, kind words, and just being there. You all helped me more than you will ever know." Godfrey is the last law enforcement officer still in the hospital following the incident, which claimed the lives of three detectives: Isaiah Emenheiser, Mark Baker, and Cody Becker.
According to CBS 21, Godfrey is a 24-year veteran of the York County Sheriff's Office, serving most recently as Special Operations Lieutenant. He is known for his work as a K9 handler, having responded to over 800 calls with his late K9 partner, Captain Dargo.
The community continues to rally around Godfrey, with a planned annual spaghetti fundraiser to support the York County Sheriff K9s, an event Godfrey was set to host. Meanwhile, an official fundraising portal has been established to support the families of the fallen detectives.
